HDRI Teapot and Balls

In early 2001 I became interested in more technical lighting systems after spending the best part of the previous year and a half hand lighting a TV series. These images represent a marriage of Brazils global illumination renderer and HDRI images produced by Paul Debevec.

To a achieve the lighting in the top most image I used an environment produced whilst working at Peppers Ghost. Its an office lit by strip lights and after taking the initial photographs I had to do a lot of post processing to remove the green tinge caused by the lighting system. Also in Brazil the main lighting had to be augmented by an array of spot lights arranged above to simulate the strip lights present there. In the version of Brazil used for this test using the global illumination for main light sources is not practical as it requires extremely long renders.

The second image uses a HDRI image from Paul Debevec's site. This was taken under natural lighting in a glass roofed coffee store. Again an array of lights had to be used to produce the main illumination, with the global illumination adding secondary lighting and colour tinting. In both cases the same image that was used to drive the global illumination render was also used as an environment map. This had its brightest areas boosted using a mask that I had prepared from the image by increasing its contrast to mask out all of its darkest areas, leaving only the luminous areas white. This mask was then used to blend in areas of over-bright white i.e. RGB 640,640,640 to simulate the brightest areas of the image being luminous i.e. the strip lights in image one and the glass ceiling in image two.
