| The Alien project was basicly an excuse to try out the new poly modelling tools in Max4 and
also a good test study for character setup and wiring. He's based on a character from Starwars Episode One
called Rats Tyrell. He's one of the pod racers. My alien came out kind of different to the character featured
in the film as mine is based on an earlier character design. He was produced using the new polyobject system and Laszlo Sebo's meshtools scripts. He was great fun to work on and demonstrated to me the power of sub-division modelling. Modelling wise I was happy with the outcome. Due to the use uf Sub-d technology he was modelled with a low resolution controll mesh that would sub-divide at render time to a much more complex and detailed mesh (which included displacement). I then used photoshop to produce his textures using plain old vanilla planar mapping from the front, side and top, plus blend masks to merge his mapping as seamlessly as possible. His skin uses a combination of diffuse colour, specularity, specular strength, specular colour, bump and displacement maps. Also the skin uses two layers, an underlaying layer of flesh (celular and noise procedular mix) and an overlay of scaly skin to create a greater sense of depth. The eyes are borrowed from and old model that never went anywhere.Finaly I created a series of morph targets and wired these up to sliders for a full facial animation system, an example of which you can see in my animations section. You can see two examples of him below. The first is a simple mug shot, the second has him showing off his choppers. |
